Wayne Hedrick | Flutist

Flutist Wayne Hedrick, a native of Wytheville, Virginia, attended James Madison University before joining the United States Air Force Band program in 1980. He served as principal flutist of the U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band for over 20 years, retiring with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant in 2004.

Throughout his career, Wayne has performed and recorded with numerous ensembles, including the USAF Band in Washington, D.C., the National Chamber Players, the National Symphonic Winds, Cantori, the Virginia Chorale, the Virginia Symphony and the Williamsburg Symphony. His solo and chamber performances have taken him across the United States and Canada, with frequent recitals throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

Wayne was a featured performer at the 6th International World Harp Congress in Seattle and the 2000 National Flute Association Convention in Columbus, Ohio. His copyrighted flute fingering chart is freely available at Practical Alternate Fingerings for Flute.  Wayne was also a contributing author for the book “The Woodwind Player’s Cookbook, Creative Recipes for a Successful Performance.”

Wayne studied extensively with Carol Kniebusch Noe and and he was a performer at the international masterclasses of Geoffrey Gilbert and Peter Lloyd.  In addition, Wayne has attended dozens of masterclasses with world renowned flutists, including Sir James Galway, William Bennett OBE, Mimi Stillman, Tadeu Coelho, Bradley Garner, Marianne Gedigian and Göran Marcusson.

Wayne currently resides in Newport News, Virginia, with his wife, Mitzi. They are proud parents of two adult daughters, Jessica and Katelyn.
